Understanding ABA Therapy

An FBI Agent working with a child

What Is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that helps children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) build important life skills.

ABA focuses on how children learn and how behavior works. By breaking skills into small, manageable steps and using positive reinforcement, children are able to build communication, independence, and everyday skills with confidence.

At Functional Behavior Institute, every program is individualized. We meet each child where they are and create a plan designed around their unique strengths and needs.

What Skills Does ABA Therapy Help Develop?

ABA therapy can help children build many types of skills that support daily life and long-term development. Depending on a child’s needs, therapy may focus on areas such as:

  • Communication and language
  • Social interaction and play
  • Following instructions and routines
  • Emotional regulation
  • Daily living skills
  • Self-help and independence

The goal is not only to teach new skills, but also to help children use those skills in everyday situations at home, in school, and in the community.

What Does ABA Therapy Look Like?

ABA therapy is often much more engaging and play-based than many parents expect.

During therapy sessions, children work one-on-one with trained therapists through a variety of activities designed to encourage learning and development.

These activities may include:

  • Structured learning activities
  • Interactive play
  • Communication practice
  • Problem-solving games
  • Daily routine practice

At Functional Behavior Institute, our therapists — known around the clinic as our FBI Agents — work closely with each child to make learning engaging, encouraging, and supportive.

Why Early Intervention Matters

Early childhood is one of the most important periods for learning and development. Research shows that children who receive support during these early years often have stronger outcomes in communication, learning, and social development.

That’s why Functional Behavior Institute focuses on early intervention for children ages 1–8, helping families support their child during these critical developmental years.

By building foundational skills early, children can develop tools that support them throughout childhood and beyond.

How Parents Are Involved

ABA therapy works best when families are an active part of the process. We partner closely with parents by sharing progress, offering guidance, and providing strategies that can be used at home and in the community. This helps children practice new skills across different environments and build consistency in their learning.

Our goal is to support not just the child, but the entire family.
